Evil Geniuses' Master's Cup

This past weekend, many computers were host to the live stream of the Evil Geniuses EG Master's Cup. Those casting were djWHEAT and Day9, and their commentaries were cast via the MSI GT660 notebook computer. While I was not able to see the initial games played, I watched the two final rounds. Why were there two final rounds in a single elimination tournament, you ask? Well I will tell you a sec-a-ret. And it is sooo good to hear it.

The tournament named the Top 16 players who would compete in the official rounds, after some early eliminations. From there, the brackets were designed for five-game rounds of single-elimination, leading up to a reward of $1,000 for first place and $500 for second place. In addition, the first place winner would compete against IdrA, the notorious Zerg player, for the chance to win the MSI GT660 notebook. The final game of the original 16 brought the well-known Protoss player, HuK, against another excellent Zerg player, SLush.

After securing a first game victory, SLush went on to lose the next three games, propelling HuK forward to the championship round against IdrA. Once some technical difficulties were resolved, the livestream feed resumed to have HuK score an early victory. However, the brilliant macro of IdrA led to victories in the next two games. Unfortunately, the fourth game saw HuK fall to a misclick error. Instead of researching Warp Gate technology, he had accidentally clicked Upgrade Air Weapons Level 1. While I'm sure many viewers wished HuK could have heard the commentators crying, he did not. As such, our hearts ached for the inevitable loss HuK would receive as IdrA spread bases all over the map. A few void rays spawned for HuK, but they were not enough to deal any significant damage to IdrA. He was able to send wave after wave of forces (although it did not take that many) into HuK's base and finally ended his suffering.

Congratulations to HuK and SLush for their excellent gameplay to get into the finals, and congratulations to IdrA for maintaining composure after an early loss to defeat HuK in their elimination round.

For those of you who don't know, pay attention this weekend to the MLG Starcraft 2 tournament being held in Dallas, TX. You will find many recognizable names there, and you will definitely find some epic Starcraft gameplay.
