The Return of Jack Thompson

Anybody remember Jack Thompson? For those of you who don't, he is a disbarred lawyer from Florida who is so anti-video game it can be considered insanity. Well he's back and this time he is responding to the upcoming release of the new Medal of Honor game. So what exactly did he do? He sent a letter to Robert Gates... yes Robert Gates. The freaking Secretary of Defense. This is an excerpt from the letter he sent. (Source: Ripten.com)

With all respect for everything else on your plate, but as someone who has represented the surviving family members of such video game-caused massacres, I personally urge you, as Secretary of Defense, to do what is necessary, proper, and legal to stop the release of Medal of Honor on October 12 on the basis that it poses a demonstrable danger to our troops by providing a training tool for those who wish to kill them.
I would also strongly suggest that the Defense Department find out who these Special Ops people are who have acted so foolishly in this regard.
Finally, I believe the full weight of the federal government should come down upon Electronic Arts and the video game industry’s Entertainment Software Association for their allowing, presently and fraudulently, despite promises to Congress, the widespread pre-sale of this adult game to minors throughout the country and around the world.

1. I seriously doubt a lot of terrorists have Xbox 360's and PS3's lying around.
2. I'm sure Special Ops people know more about what tactics are safe to portray. (Why don't we ban all movies that involve such things)
3. A video game with set levels and linear game-play will most likely not allow for a worthwhile training simulation. Also, IT'S A VIDEO GAME! I doubt most terrorists have regenerating health-bars.
4. Name one massacre that can scientifically be proven to have a link to video games (there are no studies that prove that video games cause violent tendencies in and of themselves. There has never been a reputable study proving that violent tendencies in those who play violent video games are a direct result of video games, and video games alone).
5. The federal government has nothing to do with video game ratings. Such as the case with movie theaters, it is the policy of the product distributor to choose who to sell to. Furthermore, asking the government to stop the sale of Medal of Honor would be a violation of first amendment rights. You used to be a lawyer, please know the law.

It doesn't end there. Recently, due to reactions from families of fallen troops, EA has decided to change the name of the Taliban in multi-player to the Opposing Force. I don't necessarily agree with this, but I can understand why these families would be upset. This should be the end of the story. It isn't.

Based on all these events, Dave Oshry from Ripten.com sent ole' Jack an email asking if he wanted to comment on the Taliban name change. This was his response.

Sure. I win again, as usual. Any gamers who don't think so and who don't appreciate what I do to protect our culture can go to Hell.

And in a follow up email he added

and please add: Any gamers that don’t know how to get to Hell on an expedited basis, let me know, and I’ll send along the cheat code to get there more quickly.

I know I only co-write a new, small blog. I know you probably won't ever read this. None of this will stop me, though. Mr. Thompson, over the years you have consistently berated and insulted gamers such as myself. You claim that you have "won", but you have not. If I recall correctly, you were disbarred. The only power you had was wasting peoples' time and money and you were stripped of that years ago. I have been gaming since I was 4 and I have never hurt anyone. I've never even been in a real fight. There are thousands of us gamers who can say the same thing. I'm currently enrolled at Texas A&M majoring in Political Science. I'm going to go to law school, you know, that place you went. Has gaming really caused adverse effects on me? Your comments in your email are very offensive and unprofessional. You claim to be fighting for us and "culture", but you are exactly what's wrong with it.
I have never understood what your problem is with gamers, but we are sick of it. You will never win and you can't win. Why don't you go ahead and explain it to me. Tell me why I'm wrong. Also, while you're at it, give me that cheat code that will help me get to hell.

My email is outlaw1020@gmail.com. Send me a rebuttal anytime.
